Sony Taps Aaron Sorkin to Write & Direct The Social Network Part II – Fincher Bows Out
Sony Pictures has officially greenlit The Social Network Part II, with Aaron Sorkin stepping into both writer and director roles—positioned firmly in the driver’s seat this time . Drawing from the Wall Street Journal’s 2021 exposé The Facebook Files, the sequel aims to dissect Facebook’s modern-day fallout: algorithm-driven polarization, youth mental health, the 2020 US election—and yes, Jan. 6 is on deck, though this isn’t strictly a riot movie .
Fincher out, Sorkin in:
David Fincher, the visionary behind the 2010 original, isn’t attached to the sequel—reports indicate he’s tied up with his Netflix deal and has described the sequel as a “can of worms” . Industry insiders told Hypebeast that Sorkin is “taking over for Fincher,” meaning a tonal shift is inevitable . Still, Sorkin’s track record directing Molly’s Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7 suggests he can bring cinematic heft even without Fincher’s stylized edge .
What we know (and don’t yet):
No cast announcements yet. Jesse Eisenberg (Zuckerberg) has publicly said he’d be open to returning , but nothing is locked. Sony hasn’t shared a production start or release date. With Sorkin adapting real-world drama, this sequel looks to be less origin-story, more cultural reckoning.
